NASDAQ OMX Carbon Index Series (NOCO2)

 

Description
The NASDAQ OMX Carbon Index Series is comprised of transparent, liquidity-based indexes, consisting of Benchmark Indexes and Tradable Indexes. The NASDAQ OMX Carbon Index Series is currently comprised of European Union Allowances (EUA) and Certified Emission Reduction (CER) futures contracts traded at the European Climate Exchange (ECX), the European Energy Exchange (EEX), and Nord Pool. However, all carbon emission futures traded at any recognized exchange, linked to an underlying carbon emission reduction program, are eligible for inclusion as soon as they reach the minimum liquidity requirements for the indexes.


NASDAQ OMX Carbon Excess Return Indexes – Tradable Indexes
The NOCO2 Excess Return Indexes are constructed for derivatives trading and consists of the most liquid carbon future contracts traded on global exchanges. The indexes contain only the contracts with the most liquid expiry and have liquidity and rule based roll procedure. The compositions of the NOCO2 Excess Return Indexes are revised on semi annually basis and the weights of the underlying contracts are reweighted quarterly. The objective of the NOCO2 Excess Return Indexes is to reduce administrative routines and costs due to continuous re-balancing of the portfolio and to secure tradability of the index constituents.


NASDAQ OMX Carbon Benchmark Indexes – Benchmark Indexes
The NOCO2 Benchmark Indexes are constructed to provide reliable and transparent pricing, representing the whole price curve of the global carbon market. The indexes contain all listed expiry contracts of the qualified futures. The composition of the NOCO2 Benchmark Indexes are revised on a semi annually basis. The weights of the underlying contracts are updated on a daily basis, based on the closing open interest for the previous trading day. The objective of the NOCO2 Benchmark Indexes is to act as a price indicator for the global carbon market and should be used as a comparative index for investors and purchasing managers.

 

The base date for all NASDAQ OMX Carbon Indexes is June 16, 2008 with a base value of 500.
